....find out about Alan, Mike

Hi y’all

I started my involvement with music when I was at school, my first instrument was trombone and I was really lucky that my teacher ran the local big band.

He inspired me and I was soon gigging regularly (even before I left school) and very early in my career I was fortunate enough to play some great festivals and support amazing legends like Charlie Watts, Alexis Korner, Jan Hammer, Cliff Richard and the Canadian heavy metal band (?!!??) April Wine on a TV show called ‘Rock Goes To College’.

Through playing with the Big Bands I learnt a real appreciation for swing music but when it came to listening at home I was a rocker at heart and as punk exploded I found myself more and more influenced by classic rock’n’roll…..Elvis, Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent, The Rock ’n’ Roll trio, Chuck Berry and the Stray Cats. By this time I was also playing guitar and gigging with my own small band.

I stumbled into playing some small band jazz in my early 20’s and then found myself drawn to the double bass.  I loved the physical size and the way you could feel every note…I was just blown away. Since that moment I have never looked back.

As a guitarist I was influenced by the sounds of a Belgium gypsy called Django Reinhardt and spent several years playing on the ‘gypsy jazz’ circuit.  During that time I was lucky enough to play with many of the top European gypsy players on the scene.  Some of the gypsy bass playing is in the slap style and this brought me full circle to my rock’n’roll roots.  I started my own rockabilly trio (influences were the Stray Cats and Rev Horton Heat) and finally got back to playing the music I truly loved, good rockin’ foot tappin’ bass slappin’ rock’n’roll.

See ya’ on the road somewhere……

Andy
